Effects Of Having An Unplanned Baby Essay

Improved Essays
Having an unplanned baby can affect the parent, intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, and financially. All of them have negative effects, with some positives in the mix. Overall, having an unplanned baby can wreak havoc on a person's life.
Having a baby has a profound effect on the teen intellectually. A baby will cut a high school or college career short. The teen must have a job to pay for the baby's food, formula, etc. There are not enough hours a day to go to school and work to make enough to pay for the baby's needs. The teen will have to drop out to care for the baby. If the teen does not have a degree, there are not many options for jobs that make more than minimum wage. Also, if they don’t have a degree, they will look less appealing to banks when the teen gets a credit card, car, or personal loan.
After having a baby, the teen's social life will degrade considerably. No one wants to be around a person that always has a baby with them. Babies cry, make scenes, and need constant care. Also, the teen will have less time to go out with friends because of the baby. This means less social time and more time working to provide for their family or more time taking care of the baby. An absence of social activity is known to lead to depression and anxiety.

Unintended births are those that are not planned, either from failed or non-use of birth control methods. Both married and non-married adults have unintended pregnancies due to incorrect use or failure of birth control pills (BCP 's), diaphragms, condoms, contraceptive jellies, intrauterine devices (IUD 's) and any other mechanical contraceptive method. The failure might actually be due to the product being defective from the manufacturer (incorrect drug dosage in the BCP, defective IUD 's, etc.) Other failures occur because of improper use of the product. BCP 's are less effective when a person takes antibiotics for infections and warnings to use barrier methods during this therapy are ignored or unknown.…

Both the teen parent’s and the child’s life can be affected. Teen mothers are less likely to receive prenatal care, and their children are more likely to be born prematurely, have low-birth weight, and die in infancy. Children of teen mothers are more likely to have poor health and struggle in school than children born to older mothers. They are more likely to come in contact with the child welfare and criminal justice systems, live in poverty, drop out of high school and become teen parents themselves. In addition, pregnant teens, particularly younger ones, may be more susceptible to negative health factors and be affected by pregnancy related complications…

As pregnant teens tend to be isolated from the typical adolescent life as well as endure shame, teen-centered prenatal care provides a support system where they can feel a sense of community and safety (Feldman, 2012). This allows for teens to feel supported, encouraged, and empowered in turn creating a forum to discuss sensitive topics and opportunities to learn from one another (Strunk, 2008). Many pregnant teens are relieved to learn that other pregnant teens have the same problems as them and this helps to reassure participants that what they are feeling is common and/or normal (Moeller et al., 2007). Teen-centered prenatal environments should have all the wall posters and pamphlets with pictures of adolescents instead of adult women, be accessible, affordable, and have peer groups. The prenatal care should also include continuity of care with clinicians who are experienced adolescent providers, allowing for the formation of long term caring relationships between the two parties (Bensussen-Walls & Saewyc,…
