If mankind does not change its habits, the earth could be destroyed. People’s activities, whether by accident or by choice, are contributing to the destruction of the earth. Both global warming and littering are affecting our world with catastrophic results. According to Ilissa Ocko, a scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund, regarding global warming, “Scientists are more confident than ever that humans are responsible.” (Environmental Defense Fund, 2015) Equally worrying, “$11.5 billion is spent every year cleaning up litter,” according to the organization Litter It Costs You (Litter It Costs You, 2015) Together, these two factors are costing billions of dollars and slowly destroying the earth. Young people should be particularly concerned …show more content…
In his article “Environmental Pollution Caused by Factories”, John Peterson asserts, “Factory emissions contribute greatly to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and it is estimated that industry and electrical generating factories contribute slightly more than 50 percent of greenhouse gases.” Greenhouse gases are trapped in the earth’s atmosphere and cause global warming. Another type of factory, called factory farming, also contributes greatly to global warming. The organization, Do Something, explains that, “Factory farming accounts for 37% of methane (CH4) emissions, which has more than 20 times the global warming potential of CO2.” (Do Something, 2015) The gases produced by factories and the practice of factory farming are significantly contributing to global warming. A third major contributor to global warming is deforestation. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, “clearing forests are also releases large amounts of carbon dioxide” (Environmental Defense Fund, 2015). This clearing of the forests is by choice not by accident. One of the key components contributing to global warming is the burning of fossil fuels by …show more content…
With that many people littering, it is easy to see why there is such a huge problem with litter harming the earth. Trash anywhere can make people tempted to litter and think it is okay to litter, the problem can become out of control. Education can easily help combat this problem. According to Ian Chadwick in his blog “Litter Litter Everywhere”, people such as smokers do not even realize they are littering. Smokers routinely throw out their cigarette butts and “... they do not see their own garbage as litter, merely as a somewhat bad habit or a minor inconvenience.” (Chadwick, 1-6) These people need to understand that they are littering and contributing to the problem. We need to show these people what littering is and why it is important not to litter. Also according to Ian Chadwick, “People litter because they feel no sense of personal ownership for the area they are spoiling.” By making people feel part of their community and empowered to help change it, people may start taking responsibility for stopping littering and keeping their community
