They made an area where nobody was interested at first and now people are interested in moving there. They provided many new houses and also created gated communities. These gated communities created “An elaborate system of iron gates, roadblocks and checkpoints demarcates the boundaries of the area and cuts it off from the rest of the city, at least at nighttime”. These gated communities were offered to people who wanted to be in a safe place that can afford it. When I stayed at my aunt’s house in Marikina city which is part of Metro Manila, I happen to stay in a gated community. In this neighborhood I was staying at, there were barely any car coming and was very peaceful compare to other areas I been to. Majority people in gated communities tend to have multiple maids and personal driver for them. During my time at my aunt’s house, there were couple maids there who work 24/7 just to support their families who would live with the owners and be separated with their love ones. Maids are usually young and from poorer families who work for ₱6000 pesos each month, which are estimated at $120 dollars. These maids will do basic household chores, laundry, and cleaning the house. Even when you fly over the Philippines, you would often see these shanty rugged houses as your view when you are landing because so many of these houses belong to these squatters. Every few years I go there, I see the neighborhood and street getting better each time I go visit. It has the made the Metro Manila a place where many Filipino citizens would want to live in without worrying about the squatters. Furthermore, changing these neighborhoods’ historical identities can be seen as a good thing here in the Philippines because it makes the city more beautiful. Most of the neighborhood in the Philippines is packed together house by house with having no space. Subsequently, gentrification was a positive because it provided many job opportunities since the Philippines has a lack of job opportunities and most Filipinos would often go to other foreign countries around the world looking for a job. Gentrification can provide more jobs to the citizens. You would often see so many Filipino citizens there just standing still called “tambayan” and do nothing. Since so many Filipino are leaving the country to work for another country, we are not sure if it’s safe.
