The prevalence of fast food in urban areas has increased health problems among African American households tremendously. The fast food industry is marketed towards families with low income. The areas that African Americans reside have more fast food restaurants and options for unhealthy food than supermarkets with fresh food items. Because of fast food being more available to families with low income these families are most likely to be overweight. The dangers of fast food have led to the increase in obesity and associated health conditions in African American communities. (Reitzel 264) When calorie intake exceeds calorie loss an increase in a person body mass index occurs. (Reitzel 265) The health statuses between one population to the next when dealing with obesity are especially shocking when dealing with African Americans who are now experiencing the highest prevalence of obesity in comparison with other ethnic groups. The book titled Health & Place outline some good points of not only how fast food is marketing families with lower incomes but also why. This book focused on a few pathways said to be led to how racial segregation becoming the leading cause of the prevalence of fast food in urban areas. First being done by the area’s population characteristics. Segregation correlates with population characteristics by putting people of African American decent in a category with low income families both of these characteristics being targeted by the fast food industry. (Kwate 273) The only way for these areas to make money would be for them to target the people who live there. Fast food being so cheap it is logical to expect areas with low income to “benefit” from such establishments.
