This report studies the relationship and stigma behind mental health in a workplace environment. Achieving and maintaining positive mental health combined with decreasing workplace harassment, plays an essential part in achieving success in a company. In 2008, the Canadian Medical Association conducted a study that found only 23% of Canadian employees felt comfortable talking to their employer about mental illness (“Topics: Workplace”, 2015). This statistic suggests that the remainder of people, whom have not participated in studies, do not feel comfortable discussing their mental heath. With adequate mental health, one can comprehend their own potential within society through productive work, contribution to the community and managing every day stress (Mental Health Commission of Canada, 2013). When one achieves good mental health, the risk of developing mental health problems and illnesses reduces. Good mental health can be accomplished through a number of qualities such as having a healthy self-esteem, building confidence, creating positive relationships with family and friends, making time for things that matter, figuring out one’s priorities, getting involved in enjoyable past times, learning how to manage stress effectively, coping with changes and dealing with emotions successfully (Canadian Mental Health Association, 2015). Investing in effective programs to help make a difference in our economy and to the health of the population can make a huge difference. It is important to make mental health and not just physical health, part of our occupational health and safety standards. Making employee’s comfortable in their workplace can result in less stress, a gratifying work-life balance, as well as a strong understanding of roles at their job and be able to contribute successfully to the company and workplace. A set of standards and recommendations are laid out through research of looking at workplace population and who mental health targets, what standards are already held within a workplace regarding mental health, what causes the rise in mental health, social obligation, the roles of unions and non-unionized workplaces, health standards set in place in countries around the world and analyzing what can and has been done to help reduce mental health. The examination of the differences between employees that work for a unionized versus non-unionized workplace as well as positive mental health cases in the Canada contributed to the list of
