Many criminals using illegal drugs engage in this illegal activity so they can gain money to use for more drugs. When they eventually get caught, they are arrested and sent to jail and get on probation. After their probation is up, many go back to their illegal activity and the cycle repeats itself. Most of these criminals are released from prison back into the real world with the same issues and drug dependencies that they entered with. If these criminals were to be released so that they know the negative effects of illegal drugs, less drugs would be consumed, illegal drug markets would slowly begin to fade away, and America could become a safer and healthier place to live in. These criminals need to know how drugs can affect their lives negatively and “A 1997 survey found that fewer than 15 per cent of prisoners with drug problems received treatment in jail, and little has changed since” (Aldhous). Without proper treatment and education on drugs, these criminals know no better than to go back and start participating in illegal drug activities again. They have not learned and have not gotten the help they need to successfully stay clean and to stop using. However, even with treatment dating this far back, it was not until recently that people have found that these treatment plans need to be taught well and long to sustain the abstinence of drug use among users. An example of one of these treatment programs is called The Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC). This is one of the more advanced and unique treatment programs in that is starts in the criminal justice system and continues to help drug users once they are released back into the community, and clients are monitored to make sure that they do not develop back into their old habits. Oftentimes, TASC is utilized through a drug users probation to force drug users to get help.
