Why Does Remarriage More Possible To End In Divorce?

Divorce rates have been increasing in the United States, these rates are even higher for those in remarriages. Approximately 41% of first-time marriages end in divorce for one reason or another (Ielski, 2016). This percentage increases for each marriage, 67% of second marriages and 74% of third marriages (Ielski, 2016). Many factors influence divorce, but why do second and third marriages have higher divorce rates? Studies have shown that second and third marriages are more likely to end in divorce if the previous marriage or marriages have also ended in a divorce. One’s personal experience with divorce impacts his or her views on the subject. For example, a person whose parents are divorced may not believe that divorce is morally wrong because that is how he or she grew up. Therefore, this person’s attitude towards getting a divorce is not as negative as someone whose parents are not divorced. This goes along with the issue that someone who was previously divorced themselves does not have as many negative attitudes towards divorce and may not have a high marital commitment to his or her new marriage. This way of thinking may be different than someone who has not previously gone through a divorced. This helps explain why remarriages are more likely to end in divorce than first marriages are. Religion also is a factor that affects an individual’s attitude towards divorce. Those who have higher religious values are less likely to get divorced than someone who has little to no religious values; this is true in all marriages, not specifically
