Discrimination on race; the never-ending loop
Race, ethnicity, culture and background, what does this mean? For some, it means having a diverse community. For some, it means a waste of space in their country. Discrimination can be seen all around from Caucasians discriminating African Americans to Canadians discriminating Syrian refugees. The minorities in the country get discriminated a lot because of their race. For instance, the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, takes place in the country Afghanistan. While the Pashtuns were the dominant race in the country, they would constantly discriminate the Hazaras. Anyone who has power is able to use their authority to help stop discrimination. Some would like to use their power to directly target or discriminate a certain race. In most cases, people or groups such as the government who are dominant do not intentionally discriminate a specific race, but they ignore the rights and freedom of minorities and with more countries becoming more civilized and developed, certain governments or groups will continue to discriminate minorities. For instance, towards the end of the book The Kite Runner, the Taliban had power over Afghanistan. All the citizens thought that they were the saviors but they removed all the rights and culture of Afghanistan. The Taliban discriminated everyone in Afghanistan, but to be specific they discriminated Hassan and his family, “A pair of Talib officials came to investigate and interrogated Hassan. They accused him of lying when Hassan told them he was living with me even though many of the neighbors, including the one who called me, supported Hassan’s story”(Hosseini 230). With the Taliban having power in Afghanistan they followed society by discriminating the hazaras. As Hassan is hazara the Taliban did not believe that he lived in Amir’s former house. With new stereotypes being made and stereotypes being passed on through generations, discrimination has been indented into society. To start off, the book The Kite Runner shows that the Taliban had a certain perspective on hazaras, “The talibs said he was a liar and thief like all Hazaras and ordered him to get his family out of the house by sundown”(Hosseini 230). The stereotype that Hazaras are liars and thieves gave everyone in Afghanistan a negative perception on them. While the Taliban had a negative perception on hazaras because of the stereotype, it affected Hassan and his family because the Talibans did not believe that they lived in the house. The Talibans were using the stereotype to their advantage to discriminate them. Stereotypes are used to judge a whole population, which is theoretically incorrect. If someone is the same ethnicity as the stereotype, it does not mean it is true. Everyone has different personalities, morals, but race should not define who someone is. Additionally, there are many stereotypes about Muslims that gave everyone a negative perception on them, “Terrorist,” of course, is the main stereotype that many Americans attach to Islam and Muslims, which has been heightened and fervently held to especially since 9/11”(Kunkel).
