Conflict can arise in communities that have a large number of people who have grown up/are growing up with a different cultural background (LeBaron, 2003). The negative effects of not being cultural intelligent can be seen in the education system – young children growing up surrounded by kids of different cultural backgrounds and not being aware of how these different cultures can have a long lasting effect on the level of cultural intelligence and awareness throughout their lives. Most – if not all – children have witnessed a form of bullying or ignorance that comes from when multiple people or come from different cultures and have a limited number of cultural intelligence (Scherr, 2012). However in a schooling environment where students are surrounded by teachers, staff and parents that educate and encourage them to learn more about the cultures of their classmates the likeliness of cultural ignorance is smaller. Stereotypically Australians are extremely laid back – and might not consider turning up late to work or taking longer breaks rude or worry about the inconvenience that it causes their co-workers (Kimmorley, 2015). However, someone who grew up in another country would consider this to be disrespectful and irritating if they are unaware of the differences between their culture and the culture they are now working with. However, if those working together are aware of their differences cultures between the group working together and work on adjusting and coordinating aspects of the different cultures together it can avoid the unnecessary conflict that can arise when members of a community believe that there is only one right was to act in the workforce (Quappe, S, & Cantatore, G. 2005). By a group of co-workers displaying this level of cultural intelligence it has potential to influence other groups of workers who become aware of the different methods that can be used in order to prevent conflict between cultures and provided a safer and better workplace.
