Two articles talk about how computer software is becoming a trend in grading students’ essays. Computer software that grades multiple-choice exams has been around for a while. New software has been developed in more recent years to tackle grading essays. Computer grading has evolved in the recent years, but the journey of computers grading essays has just begun. Computers grading essays is still a new concept; therefore, many kinks still need to be addressed. Like all new ideas, computers grading essays has both positive and negative connotations.
In “Why Computer Should Not Grade Student Essays,” Diane Ravitch talks about why computers grading student essays is an appalling idea. She believes that a computer grading student essays “is a truly bad idea” because computers do not “recognize wit, humor, or irony.” Ravitch makes an excellent point when she says that computers do not recognize different forms of writings. How is the essay-grading software going to know if an individual is thinking critically? The software is a computer and cannot tactically read like a human. Many forms critically thinking are in existence. A student may take a divergent or convergent way of thinking. The way a student performs depends on the student at hand.
Software grading is an understandable need that is coming forth. For a class that has 500-600 students, software grading would make giving out essays easier because the teacher would not have to spend countless hours giving perfunctory feedback. In a class of that size, having a software grading system would help the teacher tremendously. Furthermore, if a student needed additional feedback, the teacher would be there to help the
