“Mr. Brown Dr. Gross is ready to for you to come into the back to get looked at.” I said when I approached the waiting room looking for the patient Mr. Brown.
Mr. Brown gets up and proceeds through the door. As we start walking, I asked Mr. Brown to step on the scale.
“Do I need to take off my shoes and coat?” Mr. Brown asked.
“No.” I answered and recorded his weight at 280.4.
As we enter ‘his’ room I pulled out the test results from his cholesterol panel from earlier test that was taken.
“Before Dr. Gross comes in to talk to us; I’ll go over your test results with you,” I told Mr. Brown.
“Make sure you use elementary terms when explaining this to me. I was never one to learn all the correct medical terms,” Mr. Brown stated.

Brown, very good news.” “The next test that was done was your cholesterol. Cholesterol is the most common type of natural steroid found in your body. It is found in your liver and small amounts are produced in your small intestine too! Too much cholesterol is a risk of a heart attack and/or blood vessel disease. Cholesterol is essential for formation of bile acids, vitamin D, progesterone, estrogens and hormones. Too low on cholesterol could be dangerous also.”
Before I could even think about what I was going to say next Mr. Brown asked, “What was my number? Was it good? Bad?”
“Your number is 210. Average is 200. You’re a little above ‘average’.” “Heredity, diet and/or your life style could be the cause of your high cholesterol. Genes that have been passed down from your parents could influence how your body metabolizes bad cholesterol.”
He didn’t seem too worried so I proceeded onto the next test result. “The next result we have here is your HDL; which stands for high-density lipoprotein. HDL is good cholesterol that benefits your health!” “Your number reads 33.”
“33 that seems like a really low number compared to the first 2 results you’ve told

As I said earlier, exercise and a healthy diet are very important.” “Also getting these test done every year will really benefit you as well!”
As Mr. Brown had a worried look on his face he asked, “So am I at high risk for anything?” “I remembered you saying things about heart attacks? “Do I need to worry where I am now?”
“You defiantly aren’t the ‘worst’ case we’ve seen Mr. Brown. But after going through your charts and seeing you age, this is something you need to watch a little better.” “I know its so easy to be lazy and they make couches so comfy now but I really encourage you to walk a little more.” “If you don’t like going outside, get a treadmill.”
“I could put that in my living room! That way I don’t have to miss my sports.” Mr. Brown said with excitement.
“Whatever works for you!” “Also having a good sleep pattern would help!” “Try to plan to go to bed a certain time every night and wake up at the same time every day.” “Sounds kind of hard now, but once you get a routine down, your bodies alarm clock will just now its time for bed and time to get
