Effects Of Captan

Decent Essays
Captan can enter the environment from industrial and municipal discharges, through agricultural run-off, and from spills. Also, as a fungicide and pesticide, it will be present in the environment as a result of its intended use. Acute toxic effects may include the death of animals or fish and are seen 2–4 days after exposed to captan
(Vincoli, 1997). Although toxicity mechanisms of captan were extensively studied on fish (Hermanutz et al., 1973; Hashimoto and
Nishiuchi, 1981; Mayer and Ellersieck, 1986), no work has been done on the histopathological effects of captan on rainbow trout

The C8 found in the water was known to cause “observable deformations in animal’s organs”. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) even came out with a study saying that C8 was toxic, and that it lasts forever. Instead of taking action to remove the C8 from the water, DuPont decided to hide this evidence.…

Among the other environmental issue, the most pressing health issue in Maryland that I selected as being the top priority and most essential is “Saving the Chesapeake Bay”. The Chesapeake Bay is an estuary, a body of water that is formed where freshwater from streams and rivers flows into the ocean, mixing with sea water. The nation’s water is in jeopardy to 10,000 miles of Maryland streams affected by the polluting industries that carved loopholes in the Clean Water Act.1 "Save the Bay" campaign is the Chesapeake Bay Foundation – the largest conservation organization in Maryland that their mission focus on reducing pollution, restoring and protecting the wetlands and forests. Some of the major issues saving the Bay are not only of saving the 200-mile-long inlet that runs from Havre de Grace, Maryland to Norfolk, Virginia, also the 50 major rivers and streams that pour into the bay each day, and the creeks that feed those rivers and streams.1 A…

Because of rapid local urbanization, pollution, and overfishing, the Chesapeake Bay's highly diverse ecosystem is being destroyed making the estuary an unsustainable environment. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America, nevertheless its ecosystem is in danger due to human activity. Many toxic wastes from the nearby cities and farms drain into the Bay creating negative effects on the Chesapeake Bay's aqua life. Some examples of chemicals that have been leaked into the Chesapeake Bay are chlorine biocides, a know carcinogenic, pesticideKepone, a poison to fish and shellfish, and PAH, a chemical that causes dermal lesions in fish populations(Ambrose).…

A recent study proposed and led by researcher Dr. Peter Cook has established a connection between Domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by Pseudonitsczhia algal blooms and spatial memory loss in Californian Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus). In one of the experiments conducted, similarities between within session errors and spatial tasking of sea lions and rodents’ were measured. Test subjects were given four locations to forage for food after initial feeding at the central location, and are later presented with buckets placed at each location subsequently. Data collected is primarily based upon the subject’s ability to locate the filled bucket by memory. Functional MRI scans were also performed on the sea lions in order to examine the impact of Domoic acid exposure on various regions of the braim.…

Biology Essay - Oran O'Sullivan One of the most dangerous and controversial contaminants today is tributyltin (TBT). Tributyltin is one of the most poisonous substances to be released to the aquatic environment today (Knutzen, 1995). The tributyltin compounds are a subgroup of the trialkyl organotin family of compounds (Extoxnet, 1996). The main use of Tributyltin is as a stabilizer in the manufacturing of plastic products, such as anti-yellowing agent in clear plastics and as a catalyst in poly products (Vinyl chloride). Another and less expensive use of Tributyltin is as a biocide (Fungicide, bactericide and insecticide) and also as a preservative for wood, paper, textiles, leather and electrical equipment.…

Research Paper Pollution is a problem, and the everyday third grader could grasp that concept. However, what the effects of specific pollutants are, seems to be less clear. Each individual pollutant has a different effect on a different aspect of the ocean and the organisms that live in it. One important type of pollutant is an Endocrine disruptor, or to be more specific: Diethyl Phthalate. Said compounds and their results on the live marine organisms need to be studied so that the level at which these chemicals produce harmful effects must be studied, monitored, then reduced.…

If an organism has brain damage, heart failure, nausea, vomiting, hyper activity and central nervous system failure, these are symptoms that 1080 possibly could have been consumed. The death of the organism normally takes about 1 to 24 hours but it also depends on the dosage and how much has been consumed. The organisms face an inhumane death which is a reason for opposition because the animal deteriorates over a period of time. Although 1080 is soluble in water it means that it decomposes in wet and moist environments. 1080 can stay in a dead animals bones and tissue long after its dead and decomposes this means that there are chances that another animal can get secondary poisoning as it was mentioned before.…

Did it ever occur to you that the same drug that it saving you could be harming another life? Well, studies have shown that the way we dispose of our medicine can be toxic, not only to ourselves, but to the marine life as well. When we throw our medicine down the drain, in the trash or the toilet, we are polluting the water and environment around us with chemicals that are harmful to the aquatic life. People assume that throwing their drugs in the trash is a good solution to this problem because they aren 't disposing of them in a direct water stream. This thought process is extremely flawed because it will eventually just get absorbed into the ecosystem.…

Firstly, the microcystin is unsafe for native fish and birds as well as humans. In an experiment on the effects of microcystin on fish, scientists injected doses of microcystin into the bodies of the population, and fish would die from doses as low as twenty micrograms (Butler et al. 5). As for birds, illness and death among bird species are often linked with high microcystin levels in their respective habitats. For example, biologists observed that as microcystin levels increased in the Chesapeake Bay, native birds began to fall ill more often, sometimes leading to death (Koslow, Lillard, and Benka 5). In addition to microcystin, solids and sediments flowing from eroded ground harm plant and animal life in lakes and rivers.…
