Essay On Being A New Driver

Looking back at my anticipation for passing my driver’s test, I wish I hadn’t been so keen on being a new driver. Yet the perception of being behind a wheel, rolling down the windows and allowing my music to flow through the streets conveyed a sense of exhilaration, causing me to overlook any possibility of waiting. With a sense of confidence, I began driving to school feeling like an independent student being handed the ultimate opportunity. Except at that moment, my joyous attitude quickly filled into regret. Fear and distress instead consumed my mind, leaving me confused and anxious about my aftermath. It was at that moment had I wished I waited.

The sound of the collision rang loudly in my ears as I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. Shock carried throughout my body. Releasing a breath, I did not know I was holding, I slowly opened my eyes feeling the great amount of relief for being alive. The blockage of sound was unheard until the sharp knock on my window broke my reverie. With wide eyes, I shakily got out my car, still disbelieved about what just happened. I was embraced by an angry lady with short blonde hair, sporting a ghastly scowl that could scare a child.
“Show me your insurance papers,” she said.
Her authoritative tone left an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. With trembling legs, I went to grab the documents while she took pictures of the destruction. Following her movement, I inspected the incident shaking with fear just imagining the cost of the impairment. Luckily it was a minor dent, but I can’t say the same about my car. The bumper was dangling like a broken swing, revealing the auto parts like an auction.

Why did I drive when it was possible that the roads may not all be clear? Why didn’t I just wait? Had I not been more cautious and alert of my surroundings I wouldn’t be in this position. These similar thoughts continued to flow in my mind, causing me to realize what a dangerous decision I made. Seeing the curious glances of people driving by and their disapproval looks did not appear well with the situation. I felt embarrassed and horrified just thinking what others may be saying.
