Mental illness is a serious problem and affects many people, it even affects young children. There are many children that are affected by many different types of mental illness disorders. More than 1.5 million children are diagnosed with a type of mental illnesses disorder (Kerens, 2012). Mental illness can lead into many different disorders such as anxiety. Anxiety is the most common disorder in middle childhood; there are many different types of anxiety disorders children may be affected by. For this research paper I will be discussing what anxiety is in middle childhood, what causes anxiety in children, the different anxiety disorders that are common in middle childhood and treatment options for children affected by anxiety.
Anxiety disorders are the most common disorders in middle childhood from ages 4-12 years. Anxiety disorders affect one and eight children (Brumariu &Seibert, 2012). Anxiety can be experienced in many different ways such as, physically, emotionally, and in the way people view the world around them. Children with anxiety mainly worry about what might happen or they worry about things going wrong or they feel like there in some kind of danger (Kids Health, 2015). Everyone in life will experience anxiety at some point in their life. For children it is harder for them to cope with anxiety then it is for adults.
