Despite the efforts of many animal organizations in America, one of their greatest battles is animal overpopulation. According to pet overpopulation it is impossible to accurately determine how many stray dogs and cats live in the United States; animal shelters estimate that there may be up to about 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year because there simply aren't enough willing homes to adopt them. Even if the stray animal population is controlled, shelters are still struggling to maintain their population within its organization. The huge population is attributed to out of control breeding due to irresponsible owners, breeding by owners solely for profit without care for the health of animals and the pet population, and puppy mills

Accidental pet pregnancies can also leave owners with no choice, but to leave a litter of puppies or kittens at a nearby shelter, unaware of the possibility that these animals may not even have the ability to be adopted. Additionally, many people think that a spay or neutered animal will become fat and lazy, when in fact the animal is fat and lazy because of its lack of exercise and over feeding. The main reasons pets are given up is because of landlord issues, allergies, cost of pet maintenance, moving, no time, inadequate home, too many pets already, hording, house soiling, biting, personal problems, and doesn’t get along with other pets. This is just a list of excuses for not keeping your pet, which the animal shelters get left with. The majority of the country treats non-human animals either like toys or like tools, they are not automatons or commodities to be traded like trinkets, and then discarded when they no longer provide amusement.
