Allyson Wells Effects of Advertising
There have been many changes with the evolution of the Internet. It has grown, changed, and advanced many of the things we have in American culture. One of the things it has changed is in News. I want to discuss information media does and then does not have a social responsibility in regards to the news, as well as a role of the information and news media in the shaping of political opinions, and how electronic media and their convergence transformed journalism and news consumption.
Social Responsibility
To an extent, I believe the information media needs social responsibility. I loved how Elizabeth Cochrane, a young reporter from 1887, went undercover as a patient at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Because of that role, she was able to present a story that needed to be heard with a truthful account. If not for what she did the situation could have been altered to cover up the real truth of what had been happening on that Island. Information has been displayed more quickly than before. News companies had to wait till the morning after for their story to be displayed to the public. Now with the Internet, stories can be uploaded at anytime and updated as necessary. This helps with the public staying aware of important information and facts. But there is a downside. Newspapers are losing their value. People would rather read the news online for free instead of paying a fee for paper. With the newest technology advancements, it has caused sales of papers to decrease causing a drop in the need for journalists, effecting in a big loss in jobs in the news companies.
