One day in high school, I feel a pain begin fester in the back of my leg while running one day. Eventually this pain becomes so unbearable that I need to see a doctor. He was recommended to me by a friend saying that he uses alternative methods for healing. I went to see him and when there, he used a couple different techniques, including acupuncture. The next day I was able to run again with a significant decrease in pain. For over 3,000 years, acupuncture has been used to treat pain and diseases. Acupuncture is defined as, “… [the] penetration of skin areas (acupoints) with thin metallic needles, followed by manipulation of the needles, either manually or by electrical stimulation” (Chiu, 2014, p.3). And not only did the President of the United states support acupuncture as a real science, but in the next year the United States IRS determined the acupuncture treatment fees may fall under medical deductions. So, since 1973, the United States government has considered acupuncture to be a true science. In order for the government to do this, there must have been sufficient evidence. Numerous studies have been conducted, including one in Germany of over 11,000 people. The study’s results made it clear that acupuncture was both “clinically relevant and was cost-effective” (Chiu, 2014, p.125). This study presents a good case for practicing acupuncture as it is beneficial and has been medically proven to work.
