African Americans and academic achievement African Americans have been continually struggling academically for many years and this is not only affecting them individually but it is affecting the whole racial group.Today African americans face many racism, unfair judment and cycle of poverty and in order for them to fight thsese they need education and skills. Sadly their performance in education are much lower compared to other races. If education is the way for African Americans to end the cycle of poverty,substance use and for them to fight for equity and to end discrimination against them. why do African American students across the country have significantly lower academic achievement compared to their racial counterparts? As Majority of poor African Americans live in urban area they can not depend on social or environmental influence to help them succeed in achieving in school. Adolescents that live in high risk areas and have parents who are more involved in their academics are significantly more likely to perform better in schools and have a stable decision making ”(Leslie, M. G., Sameroff, A. J., & Eccles, J. S. (2002)). The way African American parents discipline their child can have a positive or negative effect. “ studies have found that academic achievement was positively impacted by authoritative parenting style and negatively impacted by authoritarian and permissive parenting styles”(Engerman, Kimarie, and Oyemade Bailey Ura Jean) interestingly African american parent “were authoritarian and Black adolescents complied with rules even if they did not agree with the rules.” (Engerman, Kimarie, and Oyemade Bailey Ura Jean). African American parents that discipline their child by motivating to do well in school has positive effect on African American adolescent much more compared to other races because those who go to school in the urban area are often surrounded sociality that does not encourage attending …show more content…
“ it is believed that some young African American male students may demonstrate an "oppositional stance" toward their academic subjects and school. However, this is not because some may lack the ability to actually do the work or feel that education is unimportant to their lives, but rather because of the negative ways in which they are categorically presented in the curriculum.( Wright, Brian L). the stereotypes often limit African Americans expression and because they are surrounded by people who have low execution they do not feel that school is a place for them. But if African american students are taught of these racial discrimination and let them know they of individual self their performance increased. “African American young people who had been taught to value group affiliation and pride, and had an awareness of societal inequity, did better in school.” (Wright, Brian L.)
