“Does the intake of caffeine improve both energy and stamina levels in elite intercounty footballers compared to a sports drink”

The Gaelic Athletic Association was established in Ireland in the year 1884. It is one of the most popular sports in the country to date. It is a 15 a side game with a pitch that is 144 metres long and 86 metres wide. In Gaelic football, there are 2 goalposts (one at each end of the field) that are similar to rugby posts. There is a net attached to the goalposts also. The game is played with a round ball and consists of scoring goals (when the ball is kicked into the net) and points (when the ball goes over the crossbar but between the posts. Goals are counted as three points, while a point is counted as one point.

Caffeine can be found in Diet Coca-Cola drinks but the main drink it is found in is coffee. Caffeine has a huge effect on energy levels in athletes. It increases the release of the adrenaline hormone into the blood. When the adrenaline is released, this stimulates free fatty acids that are found in skeletal muscle of adipose tissue. The muscles in the body will use the extra fat when exercising, ultimately reducing the need for the usage of glycogen (which is muscle carbohydrate). By reducing the need of glycogen, this means that it can be used later in exercise helping to delay fatigue in the …show more content…
Many athletes, including intercounty players, have been seen drinking Lucozade especially in the last few minutes of a match to give them significant energy to finish the game.
The aim of this study is to find out does the intake of caffeine have a greater effect on energy and stamina levels compared to a sports drink in intercounty footballers.
One of my objectives in this study would be to test an elite intercounty football team. I’m going to focus on doing the study on only one team so we can see more accurate results. If I done the study on two teams playing against each other, in my opinion it wouldn’t be accurate as one team might be a better team, have more fitness etc. If we focus on one team, we are dealing with the same players and can compare results for each athlete.
Another objective is to give the intercounty players a cup of coffee to drink before they play a match. Coffee contains caffeine so it is an ideal drink to use for this test.
Third objective would be to wait until the county teams next match and give the players a cup containing a sports drink. I’d also do this test in the league campaign which starts in the spring. Fitness levels are usually not as high at this time of the year so this means that a better reading can be obtained from the

Therefore, the results showed that caffeine had no difference in AC, AP, and PD values. However, the lactate and maximal blood lactate concentration after exercise increased significantly as well as plasma glucose levels, compared to values obtained after the administration of the placebo. The use of caffeine also showed an increase in epinephrine and norepinephrine plasma concentrations, but no significant difference in insulin plasma concentration. After the placebo was ingested epinephrine effects were 536.2 ± 58 and norepinephrine effects were 1950 ± 152, but after caffeine was ingested levels increased, epinephrine effects being 825 ± 90 and norepinephrine effects being 2277 ± 99. Therefore, it was concluded that the administration of caffeine fails to have an effect on nonathletes, but increased both catecholamine secretion and blood lactate concentrations.…

My data shows that the trials without liquid had an average percent change of -76% for heart rate, an average percent change of -74.25% for the trials with water and a percent change of 43% for the trials with Gatorade. This data shows that the sports drink has a greater effect on lowering heart rate during exercise than only water. It seems that my hypothesis was proven correct in that the sports drink with electrolytes did have a greater effect on heart rate and blood pressure, although I did not expect such a great difference in statistics. In conclusion sports drinks with electrolytes do actually make a big difference in lowering the heart rates of athletes and thus could lead to better performance from those athletes. A follow up experiment could be preformed with different sports drink brands to see if one could lower the heart rate of the participant more…

Abstract Alcohol is the most commonly used recrea- tional drug globally and its consumption, often in large volume, is deeply embedded in many aspects of Western society. Indeed, athletes are not exempt from the influence alcohol has on society; they often consume greater volumes of alcohol through bingeing behaviour compared with the general population, yet it is often expected and recom- mended that athletes abstain from alcohol to avoid the negative impact this drug may have on recovery and sporting performance. While this recommendation may seem sensible, the impact alcohol has on recovery and sports performance is complicated and depends on many factors, including the timing of alcohol consumption post- exercise, recovery time required…

Sports drinks are very refreshing and tasteful to many people and they also have the same amount of calories as soft drinks have. Water gives the body essential nutrients and properly hydrates it. While exercising, the body loses a large amount of water that needs to be replaced(source B).
