Examples Of Judgement In The Crucible

People tend to be so quick to judge others actions, especially when they are gaining something from it. Sometimes others will join, other times they will not join. Is that not human nature though, to judge someone on their actions or appearances? In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, there is a glimpse of this judgment with a girl named Abigail who people claim she is a witch, but accuses others of being witches, and everyone is afraid of witches. In a way it is just like today's society. People were afraid of witches then, and now people are afraid of terrorism and them possibility of WWIII. Obviously, people are overreacting about the whole situation, they are buying gas masks and food in bulk in response to 9/11. In The Crucible one thing stands out about judgement in the first act, and that is something Abigail says to Reverend Parris and Hale that she never called the devil, “I never called him! Tituba, Tituba…” (Miller 40). Then later that same page Abigail talks about how Tituba spoke in Barbados, so she does not know what Tituba said. Abigail was trying to act innocent, and says that Tituba made Abigail and the other girls drink chicken blood, and Tituba confesses to it. There is a lot of questioning going on, while all eyes may be off of Abigail, and now on the foreign slave. They went to go accuse Tituba instead of a little white girl because, Tituba was a slave, and Abigail was more of a housemaid, there is racism and sexism almost throughout the whole book, only the women are really being accused, and only two men have been accused. It could have been that people thought witchcraft was mor a a women’s sport. The bit of racism we see, is mostly with Tituba, because she is foreign and speaks a language no one else does not seem to
