Effective writing and speaking are techniques that help people communicate clearly with one another. Speaking is a gift that is undertaken by almost everyone and writing is the manifestation of thoughts onto paper using a written language. In order for writing and speaking to become effective, a person needs to think of how to articulate information in persuasive way. Effective writing and speaking will allow for person to successfully convey a specific message and or allow a person to successful change the minds of others around them. First, an effective speech has to have a strong opening. The opening of a speech helps people understand what is going to be discussed. In an excerpt from Institutio Oratoria by Quintilian, the beginning of a speech, “…became the practice to use prooimiom of what is said before one enters on the real matter.” An effective speech has a clear preview of what will be said, so that the audience is not confused while listening to the speech. Next, an effective speech should have the characteristic of “a narrative… is speech instructing the hearer on what is in dispute.” A effective speech will have a story line or a plot that has a beginning, middle and end. Not only does an effective speech have to have a beginning, middle, and end, it also has to have persuasive content. This content should be information that is important to the speaker and important to their audience. People become “more attentive and receptive if they know both what they are presently speaking about and what they are going to speak about later on” This content will inform the listeners about what is important throughout the speech. Students experience effective speeches every day during their classes. Teachers have to use effective speeches in every class. If the speeches and lessons that teachers taught were not effective, then their students would not be learning much because they would not be convinced by their …show more content…
Composition II, helped me to develop my effective writing style. One of our essay that we had to write was an argumentative essay. In my essay “Arguing from Experience”, I wrote an effective argument on how “…hard work is satisfying because it can benefit individuals in… ways that can be self-rewarding.” It was an effective argument because I used ethos, logos, and pathos throughout my argument. I used ethos by establishing my credibility, I did not use higher diction when I wrote the essay and I did not use slang. I established credibility through my diction, sounding educated with explanations that are made out in simple terms. I used pathos to appeal to my audience emotions, relating my life and the lives of many others to hard work. Finally, I used logos to reason how hard work can be self-rewarding, with evidence from different novels. Not only did I used effective writing in my composition II course, but I have also used effective speech when I presented PowerPoint presentations in courses. In a social psychology class, I had completed a presentation on a specific type of social addiction. I effectively spoke on how “social media offers people a way to feel that sense of belonging whenever and wherever.” I believe I made an effective speech because I have enough evidence to back up all my points in my presentation. Amanda Wilson Professor Leightenheimer English 1102-01 23 October 2017 Role and Pathos: How Eugene Debs Creates Relatability Crafting and reciting a speech can be an incredibly difficult requirement. The main difference between these and, for example, an essay, is that enunciation and delivery can make or break a speech. With this addition also comes extra importance on understanding and reading the responses of your audience to gauge effectiveness. Speeches need to have a form of an emotional pull to them, or else they sort of inadvertently transition to lectures rather than a form of persuasion. Actions can still be carried out in more logically oriented speeches, but that passion to push someone could be lost.…

After noticing the speaker’s confidence during the speech, it became clear that his calmness and ability to speak clearly, his ability to refer to his notes and to use the power point at the same time and also his ability to ensure he was the source of the information he was giving made his delivery good. This informative speech could have been improved with more body movement during the transitions and a good eye contact with the…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…

One of these is that every time I have the opportunity to take a trip to the BWCA, I am reminded of my values and why I stand for my beliefs. For example, I have learned about how important it is for me, as a person who is fiercely passionate about keeping the BWCA pristine and beautiful, to fight for this issue. The people on my Long Border trip last summer told me about the possible sulfide mining operations near the Boundary Waters. Because of this, when I joined my school’s speech team this year, I picked Original Oratory as my category. Competitors in Original Oratory write persuasive speeches with the enormous goal to change the world.…

Over the past four weeks we have examined spoken discourse through speeches, and analyzed advertisements. Howbeit, it 's time to dig into written discourse; essays are a form of written discourse. How so? An essay allows the writer to use logic in order to express their thoughts, show the writer 's understanding. To a greater extent it 's a great way for the writer to argue their point by providing sufficient evidence by using Aristotle 's three rhetorical appeals logos, pathos, ethos.…

We had to pretend we were in that moment of time where the occasion is occurring and give a speech based off of that occasion. I did my special occasion speech on my friends Rachel and Thai’s wedding. I noticed during this speech after watching it, I did have some of the similar and same habits as I did in my persuasive speech. I used my hands a lot, I swayed my body throughout the speech, was very fidgety and used “um” and “like” a lot as word fillers. I noticed I did not have as good eye contact in this speech as I did in the persuasive speech because I had to do a lot of thinking to remember where what was going to say in the next part of the story I was giving.…

The Saint Mary’s seminar classes are so unlike traditional teacher-centered learning. The Western Tradition II focuses on three learning goals; shared inquiry, critical thinking, and written and oral communication. These three learning goals really help students explore the Western Tradition by examine the themes written by the authors we discussed. De Las Casas, Rene Descartes, and Voltaire really influenced the way I thought about how our culture started and the major flaws we stay face today within our society. If everyone read and discussed the themes that these authors purposefully wrote in their text maybe people would have realized the underlying issues that have been around for forever have solutions.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
