Shane Acker uses different aspects of sound, music, and image track to effectively deliver a well-crafted short, “9”. The opening and ending sequences both have a subtle, elegiac melody that establishes the dreary atmosphere of the film. Apart from this, there is very little music present throughout; as a result, this piece of music bookends the short. The sound in “9” is mostly practical and largely from objects, such as footsteps on the ground. The minimal use of sound in this film establishes the desolation of the current world.…

When no score is present, other diegetic sounds add to the overall audio-visual environment of the film. The usage of the alternate versions of Okuribito at different points of the film coincide with research by Boltz, Shulkind, and Kantra, (1991, pp593-606) stating background music has a profound effect on retention of filmed events. This is further solidified by “opening credit and end title music…as recurring musical themes that come to represent characters or situations within the film” (Libscomb & Tilchinsky, 2005, p10). With such complex usage of sound and music, the film is able to foreground its dialogue and visual aesthetic without saturating the scene with too much music, instead opting for ambient sounds while only allowing the score to play when attempting to elicit and emotional response. The control of sound was a main theme that most likely earned the film an…

I have always been a huge fan of The Matrix so the chance to review it made me instantly jump on the chance to. While watching the Chateau Fight, I saw how the Wachowskis implemented many audio elements to create an awesome fight scene that ranks above many others. Sound sets the tone, the mood, the mise-en-scene of the shot. Sound tells us much about the movie and also clarifies the situation. If we are to feel the suspense and fear of a scene, the background sounds get louder such as foot-steps and ticking clocks. A close-up of a sweating face in the dark tells us the person is scared of what might happen or that they just woke-up from a nightmare, depending on the sounds or lack thereof. Sound has great meaning in film when used creatively as a means of clarification and expression.…
