In this text it is seen that allusion, understatement and pun are used to enhance literary features of the cartoon. Allusion is to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly which is seen in this text as an indirect reference. Seen in the cartoon, allusion is represented as the events of Ferguson with the ‘black’ deaths, not directly targeting it but directing this with the uniform of the policeman saying ‘Ferguson’. Understatement is where something is made less important or smaller than it really is which this cartoon excels at. It particularly excels at understatement by showing only a few ‘black’ persons and also one policeman, while in reality many more are dying and even more policemen are the cause of them then seen here. Pun is used to exploit the different meanings of a word where it has different meanings in different situations. Used in the phrase ‘DON’T SHOOT’, it has two meanings, one for the ‘black’ persons not wanting to be shot by the police and the second for the police not wanting to be filmed.
