My writing experience prior to taking ENGL109x was not good. I have always had trouble with how to begin my essays. I honestly never really looked into strategies that can help me begin my essays, therefore I was stuck for some time until I could come up with something, then I begin to type. Not only did I have problems with starting my essay, but I also had problems with how it flowed, especially to the reader. Since English is my second language, grammar errors is something I have always had an issue with.…

(AG) Lemony Snicket captures the hearts and minds of children at a young age, but how can people in the real world continue the excitement of reading beyond that one author? As the first generation of my family in America, I had a difficult time during my beginnings of reading and writing. Throughout my years, I’ve shown a bit of improvement. I understand that incorporating this foundation is the key to opportunities and understanding. Despite that I sometimes still struggle in this genre, I don’t want to stop developing myself to becoming a better reader and writer.…

The story that I want to share is, the basic yet often talked about transition, between high school and college. High school was so much easier for me back then, you could get away with so much more and not worried about homework as much. Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college.…

However, of course as an 8th grader I have a lot to work on when it comes to writing, chances are you have already found a few mistakes in this paragraph. In the ”fun to write” category I would place argumentative, and my favorite type of writing to read is narrative. Some of the areas in writing I could work on include but are not limited to, sentence fluency and organization.…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible.…

For the writer’s sake, a thesis helps to stay on track throughout the paper. The author doesn’t have to clearly state the main point in this thesis, but on some cases they do. Learning different modes of writing and putting them into practice will allow me to be able to approach different subjects with an appropriate style. Although I had learned to use only academically credible sources before, I had become too lax and this class put me back on the right track of being aware. I have only done papers in APA format for the past two years, so this class was a nice refresher on MLA format. I think it’s important to be fluent in both; while in college you never know if different teachers will require a different format than others. Beyond improving my writing ability, this class achieved its critical thinking development goal as well.…
