A mentor can be described as someone typically selected by the mentee who teaches a younger or inexperienced individual the necessary skills or information. As a result, the mentee would then become qualified so they would eventually be eligible to have employment in the similar industry as their mentor. Management Mentors believes there are five skills associated with effective mentoring which include; “open-mindedness, active listening, tough questioning, total honesty, and deeper reflection and self-awareness”. It is used effectively in different types of organizations as the mentor would provide advice and support pertinent to the career field. It is important to be tactful and encouraging while giving constructive criticism. Also, as suggested by Inc. com, I would be approachable and make myself accessible to the individual if they have any questions or concerns. Employees are likely to be more receptive and benefit further from effective mentoring when there are goals set as well as being given constructive feedback and instruction on how they can further improve in certain areas. When you are accessible and approachable as a mentor, the mentees will not feel intimidated or uneasy to go to you if in need additional instruction or have concerns and questions they would like to have addressed. What I think would make me an effective mentor is that I am a great listener and have a willingness to give advice and helpful feedback. According to the Leadership Connections website, the coaching leadership style is defined as being “a leadership style which seeks to keep ownership of issues and problems with the individual responsible for their resolution”. This style can prove to be quite helpful in certain situations. The coaching leadership style is most suitable when there are issues that need to be resolved and have to be improved upon within the workplace.
