Effective Followers

Daft (2010) states followers are an important part of the leader; in reality, the qualities needed for effective leader are the same as those needed to be an effective follower, effective leaders and effective followers may sometimes be the same people, playing different roles at different times. Only through starting off as a follower and working your way up, absorbing, learning, skills development, and guidance to accomplish a project, mission or goal develop a leader (Puente, 2013; A. Puente, personal communication, February 14, 2013). An effective follower is to be resourceful for the leader in helping the leader be a good leader to fill in where the leader’s weaknesses are. The more leaders and followers know the day-to-day activities and problems of one another, the better resources they can be for each other. (Puente, 2013; A. In being resourceful, the follower asks the leader about vision and goals and what is needed achieve them and uses their resource to support for the leader. In helping the leader be a good leader, a good follower seeks advice or input from the leader to help the leader improve their skills, abilities and value to the leader and the organization (Puente, 2013; A. Puente, personal communication, February 14, 2013). According to Northouse (2016) in addition to the characteristics of a follower, task characteristics has a major impact on the way a leader’s behavior influences a followers motivation.
