Effective Communication With Children And Young People

Effective communication is important for developing positive relationships with children and young people because it will help gain their trust and respect and will help them to learn. Verbal communication is the starting point to any relationship and works hand in hand with tone of voice, body language and eye contact. Good listening skills are also key to effective communication as you have to be able to respond appropriately. For a child or young person to listen to an adult they must feel on the same wavelength as the adult, so language needs to be adapted to the level of understanding they have and the adult should sit on a chair next to them, so that they are not looking down on them.
