Effective communication is defined as a verbal, written or another method of relaying a message or information in order to get a point across. Effective communication is vital within a health and social care setting as not only would you be preventing miscommunication amongst you and your peers which could otherwise lead to a devastating result on your patient’s health if it occurred; if you are seen to be very good at communicating effectively during placement, you’d easily gain the trust of your colleagues and patients. It also enables staff to provide a better level of care for patients and most importantly it would guarantee the safety of your patient, colleague as well as yourself if something were to ever go wrong.
