While this is important to let families know how their child has been doing and give both parties a better chance to alter a problematic behavior. I feel we need to take advantage and be more positive when communicating to families. “Numerous studies indicate that most communication with parents is negative, as reports about their children 's shortcomings outnumber notes about successes. To ensure effective parent and family involvement, parents need more positive contacts from and a welcoming atmosphere at schools.” (AFT,2012 p.46) We can do this by making a positive phone call to parents when their child, who may have been struggling, does something noteworthy. I have made several phone calls home over the last few years and due to the population we serve a lot of those phone calls are negative unfortunately. I feel teachers and staff when dealing with a particular student become judgmental. A student who has a history of negative behaviors at school does one thing right we say “it’s about time” and move on. I feel if we made time to leave a message or make a 2 min phone call about what the student did and recognize it as a success, parents will actually like hearing from us. We also have parent teacher conferences. I feel having both formal and informal meetings allows parents, students, and teachers to share their common goal for the greater good of the student. It becomes upsetting when a parent does not attend a CSE meeting. I understand that schedule conflicts can become an issue, but they can and will schedule the meeting so parents can attend. A lot of the time we get no parents to attend any of the meetings. We call to let them know when the meeting is and the parents say they are going and at the last minute come up with an excuse on why they will not attend. I struggle with solutions to this one as I understand the importance. I feel if parents truly understood what the meeting was and the significance behind it they would be more likely to attend. I believe that we as a school have to be more resourceful in these situations. Possibly having counselors and teachers teach parents about what the meetings are that they are asked to attend. In the article “Building Parent-Teacher Relationships” by the American Teacher federation they discuss how parents can benefit from knowledge about their child’s education. “Parents benefit from being involved in their children 's education by getting ideas from school on how to help and support their children, and by learning more about the school 's academic program and how it works.
