As educators, we try to do what is best for our students by giving them every opportunity to succeed in the academic setting. One very important way is to develop close relationships with families so we all can be consistent and effective when working with that student. Communication is the most necessary step in order for this all to come together. “Effective communication is essential for building school-family partnerships and constitutes the foundation for all other forms of family involvement in education. Good two-way communication between families and schools is a necessary support for student success in school.” (AFT, 2012 p.45) I feel my school in particular does some very good things to promote and develop this type of relationship. We have both formal and informal meetings such as parent-teacher conferences and CSE meetings, and make phone calls home if there are issues with the student. With this come several challenges. I feel being non-judgmental in certain situations as well as being resourceful when needed are challenges educators and schools face.

At my school we do a good job to communicate with families, especially when something goes wrong. While this is important to let families know how their child has been doing and give both parties a better chance to alter a problematic behavior.
