This assignment will describe the principles for effective communication and the benefits for health and social care practice.
Communication stated by Hinde (1972) is the transmission of information from one person to another or to groups of people. It has both expressive and receptive elements. NHS.UK (2016) states that communication can be verbal (speech), written and nonverbal. Nonverbal communication according the Nayad (2015) involves gaining understanding from ‘wordless messages’, for example body language. Healthcare professionals may need to alternate between communication types to meet individual’s needs.
The HCPC (2016) define a communication standard for physiotherapists to adhere to. They stipulate that physiotherapists should “communicate appropriately and effectively” towards

Colleagues must understand each other’s roles and responsibilities to avoid confusion and errors in care provision. Lingard et al (2004) stated that insufficient team communication is a large cause of errors in healthcare. Kings (2013) research found evidence of poor communication between professionals during transitions from hospital to skilled nursing facilities in the community, resulting in inaccurate medication orders and imprecise information regarding current health status, thus creating a barrier for safe care. Boaro et al (2010) found a solution such as the SBAR communication model which provides a communication framework for professionals to use which improved poor communication between interprofessional teams.
In conclusion the above principles underpin effective communication. They can be implemented in a variety of ways in different circumstances by all people involved in health and social care practice. Leonard et al (2004) stated adopting these communication principles is essential for the delivery of safe and high quality
