The kuder-Richardson Coefficient of internal consistency for PAT and PALT were 0.82 and 0.86 respectively. Three hypotheses were tested at p<.05 level of significance using analysis of covariance. The result of the findings showed that the physics students taught with inquiry- based learning strategy performed significantly better than those taught with competitive learning strategy. There was no significant gender difference in the performance of students taught with inquiry-based and competitive learning strategies. It is recommended that inquiry-based learning strategy should be used in schools to teach various concepts in physics.

INTRODUCTION
Researchers in physics instruction have acknowledge that the traditional lecture-style in teaching physics courses failed to impart deep seated conceptual understanding of physics contents in students (Clark and Elen,2006;Hakes,1998; Dzama, E N.N and Osborn, J.F 1999). This had led to the problem of poor performances and enrolment in science subjects most especially in physics instruction. The poor performances recorded has led to the use of different instructional strategies to improve students’ performance in physics such strategies include cooperative learning, peer tutoring, problem- solving technique, concept mapping strategies among others.
