Effect Of A Sport Drink On Reaction Time

Abstract Doing heavy sport such as run marathon or exercise in the gym can produce much sweat. Produce too much sweat could have a significant loss of fluid and electrolytes in the body such as potassium and calcium. This can cause symptoms from fatigue and reduction in exercise performance to more serious conditions such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke (Leong, 2007). Drinking water after exercise helps to restore water balance in the body. Drinking sport drink, which contain sugar and electrolytes, can replace the electrolytes that loss in the body. Nerve and muscle contraction can be measured by monitoring changes in reaction time to find the effect of sport drink. The reaction time

From the table below, it shows that Gatorade is replace electrolytes that loss in the body. It also affected the reaction time. The reaction time becomes smaller after drinking Gatorade.

Data Tables 1 : Reaction Time (Gatorade) Trial | Distance before drinking | Distance after drinking | | right hand(cm) | left hand (cm) | right hand (cm) | left hand (cm) | 1 | 27 | 25 | 24 | 11 | 2 | 23 | 46 | 14 | 10 | 3 | 15 | 36 | 11 | 6 | Average | 21,7 | 35,7 | 16,3 | 9,0 |

Data Tables 2 : Reaction Time (water) Trial | Distance before drinking | Distance after drinking | | right hand(cm) | left hand (cm) | right hand (cm) | left hand (cm) | 1 | 32 | 22 | 31 | 12 | 2 | 24 | 18 | 29 | 20 | 3 | 35 | 25 | 25 | 23 | Average | 30,3 | 21,7 | 28,3 | 18,3 |

Discussion The experiment shows that sport drink affected reaction time. Sport drink contains electrolytes that replace electrolytes that loss in the body. It increases nerve and muscle contraction. After drinking sport drink, the reaction time becomes smaller. This is the reason that many athletes prefer to drinking sport drink than water after doing exercise. There are some problems while carrying out the procedure, there are ; measuring the distance on the ruler during reaction time test and counting the time for running. If I could improve the design of the procedure, I would count the time when the ruler falls before being caught
