It has helped tear down the caste and feudalism systems, where people were unable to rise to their full potential simply because they were not born into the right hierarchy. I think the breakdown of these systems has increased equality, and helped mankind progress by giving people a more equal opportunity to improve their quality of life.
The negative consequences of globalisation are the spread of unhealthy ideologies, such as extremist religions; the loss of smaller cultures in the world, which is moving us towards a homogenous culture; and the easier, faster, further-reaching spread of global diseases, which is made possible with the increased international flows of people and goods. The two greatest issues, in my opinion, are environmental damage, and poverty - especially in the less developed countries.
I think controlling any of these negative aspects of globalisation would not be easy. Some, like controlling the loss of culture, or the spread of insidious ideas, would be very difficult (and probably impossible) to negate, because they are not concrete things at the core - they live in our minds. Instead of fighting a system that does not want to be changed, we could take advantage of it, and use the economy to help people in need. Technological advancements that are available to all people are crucial in resolving these issues. The development of cheap, eco-friendly technologies that would allow us to live symbiotically with the environment would be a great step towards decreasing environmental damage, while improvements in medical sciences and infrastructure could help bolster the economies of poorer countries. There simply needs to be a way for these technologies to find their way into these
