Effect Of Dettol And Savlon On Bread Mould Growth

Improved Essays
Introduction

We are testing the affect of substances on bread mould growth. The question we’re hoping to carry out is what antiseptic and cleaning substances would have on the effect of the growth of bread mould. And whether it would inhibit the mould, increase the growth of the mould or have no effect at all.
Hypothesises: it is expected that antiseptic substances such as Jik, Mr Muscle and Handy Andy will inhibit the growth of fungi, as these antiseptic substances will effectively stop the growth of fungi.
Aim: to determine the effect of household substances, such as Jik, Mr Muscle and Handy Andy on the growth of bread mould.
The bread mould will be grown and the household substances will be provided. Factors affecting the growth of fungi

Their experiment was aimed to determine the effect of substances such as Dettol and Savlon on the growth of the fungi – Candidia albicans. Their hypothesis was that Dettol would stop the growth of the fungi or slow it down because of its main substances, and that Savlon would have little to no effect on the fungal growth, the conclusion was correct as Dettol stopped the growth and Savlon had no effect at all.
There was a research paper similar to the one by Mahmood et al(2008)(3), which was from the same journal it was done by Emeka et al 2007 where they were testing the effect of Methylated Spirits, Jik and Dettol on bacterial and fungal growth.
Their experiment was to determine the effect of certain types of antimicrobial substances on bacteria and fungus; they tested Methylated spirits, Jik and Dettol. They expected that Methylayted Spirits would inhibit both substances and Dettol would only affect the fungi and not the bacteria. The conclusion was correct as Methylated Spirits did inhibit the growth of

Discussion

With the results that were acquired from the experiment, in addition to the hypothesis and literature review, some results correlated and others didn’t. petri dish B with jik added to the mould seems to have most change, by decreasing the mould growth and therefore detaching itself. In the review of Emeka et al, in this experiment they tested Jik, Methylated Spirits and Dettol. Methylated Spirits did have a more significant change on the fungal growth than the others did. But nonetheless Jik did have some affect. It was expected that Petri Dish A in which water was added would have little to no effect at all as it was the Control of the experiment. Further research would be advised in addition to the literature review. More research about each individual experiment reviewed could have benefitted. Most of the results do reflect the hypothesis, as water had no effect at all as it was the control, and Jik having the most effect on fungal

In the four-week long experiment conducted in the Bio 13 Lab, we were able to conduct a genetic analysis of the yeast S. cerevisiae, particularly investigating the inheritance and linkage of three genes: HIS4, LEU2, and LYS2. In week one, a suspension of spores was received and aliquots of the suspension were plates onto two YPD plates. After a week of yeast growth, haploid spore clones were carefully picked from the plates by sterile toothpicks and used to make patches on a new YPD plate, the master plate. In week three, the master plate was replicated onto three dropout plates: -His, -Leu, and -Lys. In the final week, the growth of the patches on the dropout plates were analyzed and class data was collected in order to conduct calculations for…

Introduction: Genetic transformation is used in many areas of biotechnology. In medicine, diseases caused by defective genes are beginning to be treated by gene therapy by genetically transforming a sick person’s cells with healthy copies of the defective gene that causes their disease. Genes can be cut out of human, animal, or plant DNA and placed inside bacteria, which could treat a person with that disease. For example, a healthy person’s gene for the insulin can be put into bacteria. Under the right conditions, the bacteria can make useable human insulin.…

The identification of microorganisms is not only important in microbiology lab, but also in the medical field to identify an agent of a disease that will help treat the patient by using the correct antibiotics to kill off the host. In this unknown lab report, techniques and procedures learned in the microbiology laboratory during the semester that was performed to test ones practical understanding of microbiology. Sourdough bread is a bread made from the natural occurring yeast and bacteria in flour. In traditional sourdough recipes, you’ll find few ingredients: sourdough starter (which consists of flour and water), salt, water, and flour. There is no yeast, no milk, no oils and no sweeteners. Its flavour and texture are largely depend on type of the sourdough starter used in the dough. In this way, sourdough starter is the essential part of making sourdough bread.…

Ethanol has different capabilities as revealed in the lab experiment. . Due to its rapid evaporation nature, ethanol is an intermediate limited level germicide with restricted contact time and limited ability to infiltrate the organic matter. The results from the experiment at 1 and 2 minutes confirm the fast acting characteristic of ethanol as it kills most bacteria in 5…

Conclusion: The experiment has showed how some bacteria have become extremely versatile and able to live in many environments and how other have not changed much over the course of time. It has showed how use of sugar, growth based on enzymes, and ability to ferment as well as motility can help us identify multiple bacteria and distinguish them from each other. This will be useful to come in the Isolating and Identifying Bacteria project since we have already isolated and observed the bacteria the information learned in this lab gives us ways to test and observe our bacterial cultures so we can compare results back to our data and attempt to properly identify them. Real world implications of this lab show how difficult it is to obtain growth in a lab at times and how tedious it can be, but also provides a database of sorts to look back upon to help study bacteria and identify which ones cause illness, where they can be found, how to test for them to prevent illness and contamination and possible ways to fight them knowing what they need to survive and what defenses and attributes they…
