Investigating the effect of Concentration of Blackcurrant squash (Sugar) on Osmosis in Chipped Potatoes
Hypothesis
As concentration increases, the Potatoes’ mass will decrease
Null: The concentration of sugar won’t have an effect on the mass of potatoes meaning it doesn’t affect osmosis
Equipment
1 litre bottle of Ribena Blackcurrant
White cutting tile
10cm3 Measuring cylinders x2
Large Potatoes x2
Beaker
Fine Liner
Digital Balances
Cork Borer
30cm Ruler
Test tubes x6
Test tube rack
Filter paper
Stopwatch

20 2 8
40 4 6
60 6 4
80 8 2
100 10 0
Method
1) Create 6 different 10cm3 concentrated solutions, using Table A
2) …show more content…
You can rub them gently until they’re dry or you can leave them overnight.
5) Once all chips are dry, record their masses by weighing them using digital scales.
6) Place 1 chip in the 0% solution, remove, dry and weigh it every 5 minutes until its mass stops changing
7) Record its final mass and calculate the percentage change.
8) Repeat steps 6 and 7 but with the other chips and solutions
Risk Assessment
Be careful when using the Scalpel, you may cut yourself so keep your fingertips away from the blade at all times.
Do not spill the water, you or others may slip and have yourselves. Ensure you always clean up spillages.
Do not drink the squash, it is not safe to drink from the equipment or in the science lab. If you need to drink ask your teacher and drink outside the class with a water bottle.
