Ee Cummings Research Paper

E. E. Cummings lived from October 14,1894, to September 3, 1962. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was encouraged by his parents to develop his creative gifts. He first started writing poems at the young age of eight. Between then and age twenty two, Cummings wrote a poem a day, experimenting with many traditional forms of poetry. Cummings studied Latin and Greek at the Cambridge Latin High School, and then went to Harvard University. He first started writing modern poetry at Harvard, where he wrote avant-garde poems that ignored conventional punctuation and syntax. Cummings received his bachelor’s degree in arts in 1915, and he obtained his master’s degree of arts the following year. After his graduation, Cummings worked for a mail-order book dealer, and left the job a month later because of how tedious it was. In 1917, Cummings left the United States for France as an ambulance driver, and was imprisoned in a prison camp in Normandy on suspicion of espionage for his anti-war writings. Cummings and Thayer had a child together, whom they named Nancy, and the two got married in 1924 after Thayer divorced her husband. This marriage, however, did not last long; two months later, Elaine left for Europe, fell in love with another man, and eventually divorced Cummings in 1925. Cummings would marry several more times; he married Anne Barton in 1929. Barton divorced him in 1932, and he married Marion Morehouse the same year.
