Gordon began is education career as a string bass performance major at Eastman School of Music where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. After graduating he performed with the Gene Krupa band playing string bass. After his stint as a musician he went on to earn his Ph.D from University of Iowa in 1958. This led the beginning of his career at Temple University in Philadelphia as Professor of Research in Music Education that lasted from 1979 to 1997. Audiation is a term that means to feel to feel tonal and rhythmic patterns internally. Complete musical understanding can happen only when a student has a vocabulary of tonal and rhythmic patterns. That knowledge can lead to a complete understanding of the tonal and rhythm content of a piece of music. This included being able to audiate, for example the resting tone, tonal function, and macro and micro beats.
