Edwin Arlington Robinson was a contradiction of himself. He was traditional, yet unique for his time. Robinson clung to conventional forms of poetry during a chapter of history characterized by changing literary styles, yet he secured his place in history as an extraordinary poet through his lifelong dedication to his craft and his remarkable character development. Robinson’s poems, especially “Mr. Flood’s Party” and “Richard Cory”, consistently explore themes of personal failure, solitude, and human nature through the eyes of his characters in the imaginary Tilbury Town.
