Edwards Weston’s ‘Pepper No.30’ fits into ‘Modernism’ because:
This new way of expression through the medium of photography rejected emotional intent and painterly effects for real, sharp actual images. The change was due to society thinking the past was outdated a new social and political emergence of the industrial world was reshaping our outlook on life.
A group of American Modernist photographers called themselves the F64 club. F64 relating to long exposure times for clear sharp images. They called this style of photography ‘Straight photography’.

In Roger Fenton’s image of the Crimean War, Valley of the Shadow of Death it is highly likely that he placed more of the cannon balls into the centre the scene to enhance the image. A couple of photographs were taken one with cannon balls and one without. It is a staged image by placing the cannonballs gives it more drama.
Digital manipulation nowadays is a controversial subject when used for competitions, news reports, beauty and fashion. Sloppy digital manipulation and blatant addition or subtraction just shows as laziness.
In 2003 GQ magazine featured Kate Winslet on its front cover. The extent of the manipulation is shocking and disturbing. Some Digital manipulation is necessary and beneficial but over use make images grosly distored. The effect this is having on the image of young woman in today’s society it is extremely worrying.
