Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands, a film directed by Tim Burton, is a gentle dive into a fantasy world that will leave viewers feeling haunted. Starring Johnny Depp as the scar-covered Edward, and
Winona Ryder as the blonde cheerleader who he is immediately drawn to, the film takes viewers alongside Edward as he tries to adapt to a bright, pastel-covered cul-de-sac neighborhood. All
105 minutes of Edward Scissorhands is filled with relatable characters, a lovely musical score, and seamless acting; it is one of Burton’s greatest and most heart-wrenchingly human films. Invented, rather than born, Edward is taken from his dreary castle home when Avon lady
Peg, played by Dianne Wiest, discovers him residing there all alone, unfinished scissorhands and
all.

Going from alienated to the handy guy next door, things start to look up for Edward. Of course, this is when things take a turn for the worse. Accused and scorned yet again, the ever-bright neighborhood below the castle begins to turn dark for Edward. But through the despair, Kim is finally able to see Edward the way he has seen her all along, which brings us to the snowy present. When watching Edward Scissorhands, one instantly begins to feel for the characters of the film. Especially the lonely Edward, struggling to learn what is right and what is wrong in a world he knows very little about. When asked what he would do if he found a suitcase full of
Sample 2 money, Edward replies that he would give it to his loved ones instead of turning it in to the authorities. Such is the response that most of us would give, if we were as honest as Edward. It isn’t hard at all for us to feel like we don’t belong where we are, as if we were created

His expressive dark eyes make it easy for the viewer to put themselves in Edward’s place. Depp’s then girlfriend and fellow actress in the film, Winona
Ryder, also did a praise worthy job of portraying the perfect cheerleader who starts to feel for the outcast Edward. Bringing their own chemistry to the film, Depp and Ryder created a relationship that was heartbreaking in its gentleness. Other than the main stars of Edward Scissorhands, Kathy Baker makes an annoying character, Joyce, easy to laugh at. Trying to seduce and prey on any man she can, Joyce is on
Edward in an instant, regardless of his sharp hands, though she is less present when things go bad for Edward. The only thing I am left wanting for is more of an appearance from Vincent
Price, who plays the inventor who created Edward and left him incomplete. With the engaging characters, touching soundtrack, and fluid actors, Edward
Scissorhands is a film I look forward to re-watching in the times to come. It was refreshing

In both Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Corpse Bride (2005), the characters were relatively ‘different’ from those that they were surrounded by, therefore making them strange and considerably odd in the eyes of people they came in contact with- there was sympathy, pity, indifference, sacrifice, attraction, jealously, repulsion, understanding, fear, and prejudice surrounding both these characters as they discovered the real world. Both films are extremely fairytale-like, which contrasts with their more adult themes, which convey a universal truth about human nature or life if looked onto. These are the stories of an uncommonly gentle man and a grave misunderstanding. In both Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride, the main protagonists,…
