Edward Jenner (17 May 1749-26 January 1823) was an English physician and scientist. He is known for being the pioneer of smallpox vaccine, the world’s first vaccine. 60% of the population in Britain at the time caught smallpox and 20% of the population died of it. Jenner was also the first person to describe the brood parasitism of the cuckoo, which is when an organism relies on others to raise its young. He was born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire and worked there as well. Major events that happened during this time were the change of the start of the year and the changeover from the Julian calendar.
