Literary Analysis Essay on Tangerine
Paul hears the splintering of the wooden walkways between the portables as he pulls students out of a deadly sinkhole. Paul Fisher moved into a new development called Lake Windsor Downs. At his new school, Lake Windsor Middle School, there is a sinkhole that swallowed the classroom portables that housed all of the seventh and eighth-grade classes. While the school is being repaired he has the option to go to Tangerine Middle School with no IEP in order to play soccer. He then gets expelled from Tangerine Middle School because of jumping on a teacher’s back. His next and final school is St. Anthony’s Catholic School. “‘...The penalty for this and any other Level Four Infraction is expulsion.’” (pg. 294) That was when the principal of Tangerine Middle School, Dr. Johnson, told Paul that he is getting expelled from all Tangerine School District schools. Paul plays soccer with some boys including Joey Costello. “They weren’t very good. Not one of them seemed to know how to kick.” (pg. 32) Paul wanted to see how good of a chance he had of making the team. After what he saw he thinks he has a good chance. When Paul played soccer with Joey Costello and his friends his confidence got boosted.
Paul’s choice to attend Tangerine Middle School affects his learning. When Paul went to Tangerine Middle School he got a fresh start with no IEP and he can play soccer again. “‘...I want to go to Tangerine Middle School and I want to go with no IEP.’” (pg. 94) Before Paul went to Tangerine Middle School he had a label, and he could not play soccer. After he had gone to Tangerine Middle School he had no label and he could play soccer, he also could learn the same way as the other students in his grade.
