Edward Allassi

In the fall of 1957, Edward Allassi sits near the window of his powder blue bedroom, resting from complete exhaustion. His foot rests by the curved, cabriole leg on a fauteuil chair - a piece from the Rococo period.
Gazing down the long drive of his grand French villa, to the large cast iron entrance gates, with their art Deco detail Edward is engrossed in thoughts of his youth. He stares at the lamp posts decorated with lion’s heads, recalling the day the lion’s heads were installed. He had been a young boy, then. Things had been so much different.
There is a soft knock at his bedroom door. He recognizes his majordomo. “Yes Archille, come in.”

From her long sable mane, held back with two diamond clips; to the elegant silver slippers on her flawless feet. She is stunning. Clad in an iridescent, crinkled organza gown painted with Ebru designs, she is radiant as she waltzes into the room. He nearly drops his glass of brandy when their eyes met. At that moment, he does something he has never done. He openly stares at the swan-necked beauty. His gaze holds hers for just a brief second. Suddenly, the rock-hard spine of one of the most eligible bachelors and toughest shipping men is split, by volcanic fires.
Her skin, like porcelain, is as fair as any Snow White image he has ever imagined. Her hair, the color of heraldry, reminds him of childhood fairy tales. And those full vermillion lips. They create a longing he hasn't felt in some time. She is Snow White, Ava Gardner and a wild Gauguin Vahine beauty, all wrapped up into one exquisite package. And she is seemingly unaware of the effect her looks has on nearly every man in that room. He’s

The Russian Bride’s Attire is a life-sized oil painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky that is currently hanging in the Legion of Honor. At 110 x 147 inches, the piece pulls you in; as if you could step right into it and begin helping the ladies prepare the bride for marriage, or maybe bust her out of there. Makovsky is telling a subtle story through the composition and subject of this painting. The amount of emotion he brings with his angles and use of light and color is breath taking. He’s telling the story of a young girl who is set to be married off to the king, although this may sound glamourous, the girl looks unhappy, and no wonder; she’s a teenager preparing for marriage, preparing to leave behind her family and everything…

In the short story, The Destructors, Trevor is alienated from the community in which he grew up in when his family loses their social status, “his father, a former architect and present clerk, had “come down in the world” and that his mother considered herself better than the neighbors” (Greene, p.1). This move to Wormsley Commons and the related unexplained financial loss contributes to T.’s lost innocence and alienation from a life he once knew as well as alienation among the ‘gang’ he now associates with. T. has the opportunity, the experience of being able to visit Old Misery’s home, but as all the boys don’t have an experience with beauty in the world and instead are experienced with war, "It was the word “beautiful” that worried him—that…
