Edvard Munch's Painting, The Scream

When I was in the fourth grade there was a replica of a painting of The Scream by Edvard Munch. I'd look at the painting and wonder why the person was screaming. Would it be because someone was holding him at gunpoint, was his wife cheating. I asked my art teacher what the painting meant. She told me,”When it came down to it a “scream” is above all sound and an auditory sensation” after we'd looked it up. After that any time I'd see a painting, drawing, or picture I'd ask what the meaning of it was. I think that looking at or drawing something made me feel like there was more than just what people said in life.

By fifth grade I loved drawing things with meaning. The most meaningful thing to me at the time were sunsets. I'd draw them all

Munch – The scream One of the best oeuvres ever created by humans, “The scream” is widely considered as an epitome of juxtaposition of its creator’s mastery in choosing colors and dexterity in conveying the painter’s emotional state. Although painted numerous times by the same author, every example of the painting holds some kind of genuine feeling, unique to that composition. The picture can be theoretically spilt into two parts: the background and the face. The blazing scarlet sky, the blue placid sea and the seemingly infinite road merge in the horizon, creating an astonishing background for the dismal figure.…

The Scream by Edvard Munch is an iconic painting in today’s time, much like the Mona Lisa has been in the past. Munch found his inspiration for this piece of art from an actual place located on a hill in Norway and at the bottom of the hill was the madhouse where Munch’s sister was kept. The painting is of a person with a ghostly face, standing beside a railing. What catches your eyes in this photo is the person is standing there shrieking, mouth wide open, with a hand on both sides of their face. Once you look beyond the person you notice two silhouettes who appear to be men and a city far off in the distance.…

The theme and what the artist was trying to portray are very thought provoking and the painting has an overwhelming sense of uneasiness. The artist Edvard Munch is just as fascinating as the painting itself. He was very afraid of insanity and going mad and that seems to play a great role in a lot of his works and very much so in this one ( "MOST POPULAR PAINTINGS.”). Edvard's skill as an artist is very apparent in this painting an it is to no surprise The Scream is considered a masterpiece and and so well known as to be referenced and parodied still to this…

As a child, I never understood why art was created. But I never got that far because I mostly focused on what was tangibly in front of me and not what was underneath: the artwork's purpose. I always found myself fascinated of how the artist was capable of creating such a work of art that I found myself wanting to achieve. I did not realize that there was a bigger concept behind art. In Ralph Waldo Emerson's article called “Art”, he talks about how he defines art as well as its purpose and in Scott Momaday's article “The Arrowmaker”, he explains the power of language.…

The object is to analyze how each movement affected and influenced Realism. The movements are linked to other genres; Romanticism is coupled with Classicism, and Realism is associated with Idealism. Both movements faced criticism due to an opposition of majority taste and offensive subject matter. Despite the impediments, the movements succeeded to be deemed innovative in style and context.…
