Edvard Munch The Scream Essay

For my paper I have chosen to talk about and critique Edvard Munch's The Scream. This particular piece of art was created by using a piece of cardboard and applying tempera as well as casein ("Munch, Edvard."). This painting is believed to be painted in the year 1893 ("Munch, Edvard."). Edvard Munch was born in the year of 1863 and died in the year of 1944 (Edvard Munch Biography.). He was born in Norway but for about 10 years he traveled far and wide in Europe especially between Germany and France (Edvard Munch Biography.). He started painting around 1880 and kept doing so until the day he died (Edvard Munch Biography.). “During his lifetime of work, he made one of the most significant and enduring contributions to the development of Modernism …show more content…
The lines in this painting play very big role in the emotion of the piece. In the sky and to the right side of the painting the wavy and sweeping strokes help to draw you threw the painting as well as giving me a sense of uneasiness. As said in our book Understanding Visual Artforms in Our World lines can do many things such as conveying emotion and creating movement in the artwork itself. The curvy lines are also suppose to represent in a way the absorption of the individual into nature itself ("MOST POPULAR PAINTINGS."). I believe this is one of the bigger points Edvard was focusing on conveying in this particular painting. There is also a great contrast between the sweeping flowing lines and the relatively straight lines of the fence separating the figures from the background. This contrast in the painting helps to create emphasis and draw the viewers eye through the painting as well as being able to convey mood in the piece (Understanding Visual Artforms in Our World.). The lines are used to create this contrast and the contrast of the straight path and fence compared to the swirling background help to create this sense of …show more content…
The theme and what the artist was trying to portray are very thought provoking and the painting has an overwhelming sense of uneasiness. The artist Edvard Munch is just as fascinating as the painting itself. He was very afraid of insanity and going mad and that seems to play a great role in a lot of his works and very much so in this one ( "MOST POPULAR PAINTINGS.”). Edvard's skill as an artist is very apparent in this painting an it is to no surprise The Scream is considered a masterpiece and and so well known as to be referenced and parodied still to this

Lines can be perceived when they connect, are in close proximity, or are adjacent to other lines. In her painting, Rockburne uses sharp, straight lines that intersect multiple times all over the composition. Dorothea Rockburne’s use of diagonal, horizontal, and vertical lines provide a basic structure to the work of art. Horizontal lines suggest calmness, while vertical lines suggest a sense of permanency. The use of diagonal lines are the most dynamic, restless lines (24).…

Color: The painting has a combination of complimentary colors that give the piece a warm look. For instance, the yellow and orange provides light to the composition and also add a visual depth to it because both colors reflect the scheme of a peaceful night. In addition, the blue in the sky beautifully portrays harmony throughout the painting, and the black in the background perfectly contrasts with the blue in the sky and the circled white brush strokes…

Charles Bertram Rees, Jr’s oil paining Adroit Apiarist (1959) is currently on display at The Museum of Texas Tech University (fig. 1). This oil painting shows an adroit apiarist, which simply means skilled beekeeper, getting ready to use a bee smoker on a hive of bees. The smoke is filled with chemicals that render the bees incapable of defending their honey. The passiveness of the bees is echoed in the rest of the elements of nature in the photo. These other elements of nature are receiving the same treatment by humans, yet they remain submissive.…

Year 10 Comparative Essay Expressionist artists such as Edvard Munch and Frida Kahlo create artworks as a therapeutic method to conceal their despondency. Memories and feelings of the soul are conveyed through expressing a figure featuring exaggerated and obvious characteristics that portray their inner emotions. The disconsolate environment and haunting experiences were a key factor in creating the movement Expressionism in the early 20th century. Throughout this essay the artworks Roots by Kahlo, and The Scream by Munch, will be deconstructed in order to interpret, compare, analyse and draw conclusions to the artist’s intentions. Socially rejected and alcohol addicted Munch was a Norwegian symbolic painter and printmaker born in 1863.…

We all know that feeling when entering the theater room that is hosting the newest horror movie, sitting patiently waiting for that moment that is approaching fast, but why is it that this feeling always seems to occur when watching a horror movie? Many wonder the same thing, this is why Stephen King has answered a lot of many wondered questions. Three great claims that are brought up in his essay “Why We Crave Horror” mentioning the reasons why people dare to enter the theater room to watch the horror film: one, being to have fun; another, to face the fears we have about the horror film; and lastly, to have the feeling of normality one receives after the movie. Many people crave horror due to the fact that it indeed makes a fun time while watching it.…

Also, it can explain why horror transcends into society’s boundaries. Horror has survived through many generations simply starting as oral storytelling. To understand the roots, it is primary to ‘recognize that modern horror fiction is evolved from earlier recognizably similar kinds of stories’ (Clasen, 2010 113).…

It also used lines to create form and shape. The way the painting was structured allowed different lines to create the shape that was being produced. I believe that these two visual elements worked together to give the painting the feeling of having an actual feather being present throughout the picture. In the painting, color was the visual element…

An early example of the paintings of Art Nouveau is Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.” This painting was created in 1893 and later showcased during the artist’s first Paris show at La Maison de l’Art Nouveaux gallery. feels alienated and abandoned as he is obsessed by the memories of home. He is set against the landscape of loneliness, on the seashore and beneath the vaulted vastness of the night sky, echoing similar landscape as in Edvard Munch’s Melancholia (1902) or Anselm Kiefer’s Sternenfall (1995). Liminal sites are thought to echo loneliness and longing (Bowring 2008: 72), and as seen in this example, the in between spaces of land – sea and land – sky emphasize the melancholy of the narrator. The narrator describes the desert as “vast fields of sand”, thus highlighting the isolation and uneasiness of his experience. According to Bell (2014: 178), the desert itself is melancholic and represents the way a melancholic sees and feels the world, hence…

    The Scream Poem Analysis

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
