The rooms are typically shared. However, private rooms may also be available. The guests will share bathrooms, lounges, and sometimes even a kitchen.
Elderhostel is a not for profit educational travel organization for elderly adults that has been around since 1975. The program is for elderly folks that are age 55 years old and older. The programs range from one day to several weeks in length. The elderly travelers are provided with comfortable accommodations. Accommodations include, delicious meals, lectures, field trips, excursions, program related activities and also gratuities. I think that most people would prefer privacy, especially in a strange and unfamiliar space. However, there are some people that prefer to meet new people and do not care about these matters. The other con to these sort of travels are the dates. A person has to have all their ducks in a row such as time off of work planned out well in advance. These trips are not last minute, “let’s go for the weekend to New York” sort of trips. However, I think most people like to plan ahead for their vacations, so these trips would not come as a problem. Another con to these trips is, if you like to go on your on and explore the places where you travel. Noe everyone likes to have a laid out schedule and time schedule on what you are going to see and do. However, the travelers know this well in advance on what kind of trip this is.
