Technology in the 21st Century
Computers, and technology in general, have undergone tremendous changes since the turn of the 21st century. Computers went from blocky chunks of hardware, to sleek and streamlined laptops and handheld paper thin tablets, which have revolutionized education. Whereas mobile phones have also slimmed down, losing their keyboards and making every aspect of daily life more convenient, however have had caustic effects as a result. However, the advances in technology do not stop at devices used to check email and social networks. Technological improvements in the 21st century, encompass all fields including medicine, transportation, production, warfare, and finally leisure.

Specifically, in the areas of cyberbullying and the sharing of information. In regards to cyberbullying, harassment of a student by their peers no longer stays in the classroom or cafeteria, due to social media as well as text messaging. If a student is being antagonized online, it is nearly impossible to escape being that they cannot simply “just walk away”. Additionally, cell phones make it extremely easy to share personal information, and anything that is put online, never truly goes away. For example, job interviews are now accompanied by the employer conducting a social media search, and if they find a picture on Facebook that you were tagged in holding a red solo cup at a high-school party, good luck landing the job. In regards to the medical field, 21st century modern medicine is so progressive that it resembles oddities outlined in 20th century works of science fiction. Some of the more avant-garde procedures of today are in the genetic field. One example is, gene therapy, a “a treatment that involves altering the genes inside your body 's cells to stop disease” (“Tests and Procedures: Gene Therapy.”). Another example, and highly debated, is the notion of “designer babies” or where “genetically modified for beauty, intelligence or to be free of disease” (Gallagher 2015). On the topic of transportation, modern technology has made it easier than ever before, from mapping tools that assist commuters on the proverbial underground method of transport in New York City, the subway. Additionally, many planes are now outfitted with wireless capabilities providing the passengers with the opportunity to stay productive, and entertained, during long flights. Furthermore, there are several apps on cellphones, like Uber and Lyft, that provide car-less individuals thousands of different ways to travel from point A to point B (Steinmatz 2014).
