How Technology Affects the Education System of Today
As technology progresses further, it begins to integrate itself more into daily life. Today, it has found a way into the education system, altering the way teachers plan lessons and the way that students complete their homework. Some believe that this trend is for the better, creating a network for online schools, allowing students quicker access to research, enabling the ability to easily collaborate on group projects, and more. Although the positive effects are certainly present, there are also impacts of the increased use of technology that are changing education in a negative way.

Students going to traditional schools also have computers, smart phones, smart boards, and more in their school environment. One way this affects them is in how they are able to research information. With the invention of the internet, the information of the world is at everyone’s fingertips. It only takes seconds to find out the answer to nearly any question. The Pew Research Center conducted a study, and reported “76% of teachers surveyed “strongly agree” with the assertion that internet search engines have conditioned students to expect to be able to find information quickly and easily” (Purcell et al.). This way of research has completely changed the process students must go through to find credible information. Trying to figure out what information is accurate and comes from good sources becomes a new lesson to students (Lynch). However, some worry that that students are becoming used to immediate responses, consequently shortening their attention spans. Valarie Strauss argues that “it’s not their overall ability to pay attention: kids today can, I think, get lost for hours in a movie or a book or a game just as readily as their parents did. Rather, the seemingly shorter attention span is their ability to maintain attention on a task that is not very interesting to them” (Strauss). Kids nowadays are learning to expect things to be either quick, easy, or entertaining. Tasks that do not fall into …show more content…
On one hand, it has created a platform for a variety of new things: online schools, quick research, simple collaboration, interactive lessons, and more. However, there is the downside that things have become too easy, causing students to lose the value of a hard work. Furthermore, the internet is making it effortless to cheat on assignments or to get distracted from homework. No matter what, there is always a positive and negative side that can be found in anything. When it comes to technology, it cannot be singled out as simply “good” or “evil”. Truthfully, it comes down to the person and how they choose to use their technology. Although there are plenty of options for students of ways to use the internet for “evil” they will hopefully choose to use it for the right

In Is Google Making Us Stupid, Carr and his friends have seen a shift in their cognitive experiences because of their time online with the expansive amount of information online. Carr mentions a blogger, Bruce Friedman, and he describes that the internet has altered with his brain, “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print,” and Friedman said that his thinking has taken this “staccato” sort of quality to it. Not only that, he cannot even read a “blog post of more than three or four paragraphs” without having to resort to skimming (Carr 93). This sort of behavior is something that the internet is teaching not just the young, but the average adult. According to Maryanne Wolf, reading is not a skill that we use as an “instinct,” unlike the natural urge to talk and communicate with others (Carr 94).…

Many school systems in America are using more technology every year. By having more technology, students are given the opportunity to use computers and the internet to expand their researching abilities. Though technology has been increasing, does it positively affect the students? According to Susan Pink, author of “Can Students Have Too Much Tech,” she reported that students who grew up with modern technology were more likely to fail in academic classes. Although the internet can have a negative impact on students grades, I believe that students should have a limit on how they can use technology.…

In my reading of the NY Times, many teachers chimed in to agree that the advancement in technology had made their students attention span shorter, and had made them less efficient. While it has been argued for many years about whether pencil and paper notes or online notes are more effective in retaining information. While online notes make notes more organized and allow more information to be written due to the speed of typing, it has been proven that note-taking by hand proves to be far better in information retention and mastery of the subject. In a study at Princeton University, Professors Mueller and Oppenheimer came to the conclusion that with notes by hand, students are forced to paraphrase and come up with conclusions on their own sometimes, while with online notes there is a trend of students who simply try to take down the lecture word for word. While in Source D it may be said that writing is simply too tedious now in society and education, it must be shown that the analog way of doing things has proven, both in the past and present, that it has helped the human race learn and retain information to the point of mastery far better than the technological…

As far as technology in education goes, it is an absolute necessity for schools to adapt to such technological changes if they want to keep up with the modern world. “The most successful higher education organizations in the future will be those that most effectively plan for, implement, utilize, and manage technology” (Gray, Stefurak, and Surry 2).
