Educational Psychology Career Paper

I have been diagnosed and counseled by psychologists when I was younger. My first psychologist that I visited was very distant and cold. His office felt too clinical and suffocating. The entire process was very overwhelming and terrifying. I did not feel safe or eager to open up to an adult stranger. I wanted to bury this experience deep inside my memory. But, now that I am looking for a career, this buried memory keeps arising. I realize that this bad experience inspires me to become a psychologist. I do not want anybody else, especially young teenagers, to go through the same thing I had to. Another source of inspiration to pursue this career came from the second psychologist I went to. Her personality was exciting and her office felt inviting. She was easier to talk to than the other psychologist who was mean. Through her work, I was able to figure out my problems and solve them in a healthy manner. I am afraid to even think what I would have become without her help. Educational psychologists focus on different teaching methods, diverse classroom environments, and social or behavioral problems that slow the cognitive process of learning. Many students today have disorders such as ADHD or a learning disability like dyslexia that can distract them in the classroom. An educational psychologist assists by figuring out ways or teaches these students how to overcome these disadvantages and succeed in learning. For other students, school can be frustrating with the overwhelming school work and their relationships with other students which includes bullying. Bullying is a huge problem in the school systems and results in students acting out. It is the educational psychologist’s responsibility to evaluate old and invent new systematic ways to deal with these
