Educational Philosophy

The task of working with our future is one I have embraced and have taken to heart. My beliefs about education have changed and developed during my seven years as an educator, with old ideas being challenged and new ones created. Education is my passion. It is a tool I have used to change not only my world, but the lives of the students I’ve come in contact with.
My educational philosophy embraces my beliefs that every child can learn, when all stakeholders work together to narrow the opportunity gap. Student who are placed in an environment, which embraces the ideas of teaching the whole child, fostering their developmental, educational, and social needs, have a better opportunity to be successful.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that placing myself only in the classroom, would be a disadvantage not only for myself, but also for my students’ success. In today’s education, the role of being a leader extends beyond the positions of administration. Teachers are needed to help with motivating students and other teachers, while helping to create and direct the visions and mission of schools and organizations. I have been fortunate to have earned several leadership roles. Taking on such roles have allowed me to grow as an educator, equipping me with the necessary skills to positively affect my students, their families, and my colleagues. Working with these teachers of various backgrounds, I was able to lead our efforts to implement department standards. While leading the teachers in my department, our focus was also on facilitating growth of instructional programs and the supervision of ongoing strategies promoting the educational development of our students. As department chair I learned how to maintain and encourage a climate of high expectations, cooperation, support, and positive attitudes. Doing so I feel helped my department to identify the needs of our students, and the steps needed to impact their understanding of the English Language Arts standards. This role also allowed me to communicate to teachers, effective teaching and classroom management strategies, and how to implement them with success.

 Leveraged Adolescent Literacy and Learning Initiative (LALLI)/ Adolescent Literacy Project (ALP), University of Louisville
As a teacher leader, I worked with other teachers to develop a school-wide literacy plan, to improve reading and writing across the contents. Working with my fellow teachers and with the experts from the University of Louisville, I became knowledgeable of research based strategies and skills to help improve our students’ reading and writing abilities.
